Album "Karaites of Moscow"/ compiled by V. Kefeli, photos by B.Taimaz - Slippery-Rock, USA - Moscow, Russia: International Institute of Crimean Karaites, 2005 (in Russian) The Institute publishes hereby the archive photoes taken by Boris Taimaz - an unprejudiced and assiduous chronicler of life of Moscow Karaite community. These photoes conjointly with articles in "Karaite News" show a real panorama, an original canvas of passions and joys of this small community of the ancient Crimean nation. The community is relatively young and heterogenous and composed by Karaites originated from Crimea and other regions of Ukraine as well as from Russia and Baltic countries. The well-being of the people is based on activities and intellectual potential of its members and Boris Taimaz gave us splendid pictures of the rich intellectual life and public work of Muscovites belonging to the community. Фото на фоне публикаций "Караимских вестей" создают панораму, своеобразное полотно страстей и радостей маленькой общины древнего крымского народа. Караимы, несмотря на свою малочисленность, сумели пронести сквозь века верность своей религии, своему языку, своим святыням. Разгром караимских библиотек, музеев, кенаса в Советском Союзе привел караимов к необходимости бороться за свои национальные ценности. Сохранение части материалов Карай Битиклиги - давняя и почти детективная история, в которой в начале 1990-х годов участвовали С.Н. Фиркович, Т.С. Бабаджан, И.С. Бабаджан, С.Я. Шамаш. Московские караимы дошли до уровня правительства России и российского президента Б.Н. Ельцина. Теперь Борис Таймаз располагает списком основных рукописей, которые сохранили московские караимы. Их список мы публикуем в данном альбоме. Популяция московских караимов относительно молода и гетерогенна. Ее составили караимы Крыма и других областей Украины, а также России и стран Балтии. Благополучие караимской общины Москвы базируется на активности ее членов. Б.С. Таймаз сумел своими фото показать активность и интеллектуальный потенциал москвичей. Пожалуй, ни одна из караимских общин, даже община караимов Крыма, не вела такой насыщенной интеллектуальной жизни как община московских караимов - что и стало объектом фотоанализа Б. Таймаза. Борис Таймаз своей фотолетописью внес посильный интеллектуальный вклад в развитие Института. |

Album "Karaite Hadj (Pilgrimage) to Holy Land"/ compiled by A. Kefeli - Slippery-Rock, USA - Simferopol, Ukraine: International Institute of Crimean Karaites, 2004 The content of the album is based on the rare archive data on Hadj (Aliyah) - journey of Karaites to Holy Land. Many generations of Karaites Hadji keep in their memory the stories of Hadj and repeat them in mejuma for the children and grandchildren. In the Karaite community the man who did the Hadj has the honored name Hadji (Jeru'). It was an honored name which brought whole Karaite Family Hadji to the Patrician level of the Karaite society. On the other side those who did not care about the visit to Holy Land is called as pijassor. It was a certain non fixed rule of the classification of the Karaite families. During many decades Karaites had no possibility to visit Holy Land and touch the Holy Stones and soil of Sinai, Jerusalem, kenassa of Anan ben David. This issue differs much from preceding publications on this topic. It seems to be the first well-illustrated album with unique material gathered from Karaite families’ archives and rare albums. Most of lithographs, drawings and photos included in this issue have never been published before.

Сима Исаковича Минаш - от двух мелитопольских караимских родов Минаш
и Танатаров. Мать Жени, Фани Минаш - крымская караимка, прожила всю
жизнь с Симой и умерла в Персии (Иране). Имя Жени Минаш принадлежит
как Франции, так и России. В данном альбоме собраны архивные фотографии,
копии некоторых ее работ, старинные открытки. Новые фото сделаны в Петербурге,
Москве в 1995-1996 годах, а в Париже и Стамбуле - в 2003-2004 годах.
Родственники Жени много рисовали, но уровень таланта Жени Минаш остался
непревзойденным. Писал маслом отец Жени, Сима Минаш. В Праге, в частном
собирании Хорлингеров-Петру, хранятся парадные портреты членов этой

Penbek - Simferopol-Slippery Rock, 2004. - 50 pages Ways of Karaite families in emigration after Bolshevik Revolution were winding, full of ups and downs. The Archive of the Dmitry Aleksandrovich Penbeсk, (Nice, France), contains documents of two Crimean Karaite families - Penbek (Yekaterinodar) and Kefeli (Sebastopol, Crimea) that have emigrated from ruined Russian Empire. The end of the 19th century and the beginning of 21st century are the time frames of this Archive, which deals with 5 generations. These documents show us the fates of the families' members during the pre-revolutionary period in Russia, the Bolshevik Revolution (1917), the Civil War (1918-1922), and the emigration of some families' members to Turkey, Serbia, and France (1920-1930). The Kefeli branch was particularly described by the authors of "Karaite Folk Encyclopedia", (v 6/1, Moscow, 2000). However details of both lines are presented in the book by B. S. Eljashevich Moscow, (1993), Russian Academy of Science. The scientific importance of the Penbek Archive is based on the documents signed by Felix (Pinchas) Aronovich Maleсki (1852-1925), Seraya (Sergei) Markovich Shapshal (1873-1961), Levi Babovich, and Tobiah Simovich Levi Bobovich (1879-1956). Also the materials of the Penbek brothers activities in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century are very important. |

Album "Karaites of Turkey"/ compiled by V. Kefeli - Simferopol-Slippery Rock, 2005. - 53 pages This issue of Institute archive is devoted to the Karaites of Istanbul. Here, in Turkey they have been living during 10 centuries, here they have been keeping up precepts; here they gave a good reception to A. Firkovich and M. Szapszal. The relative, cultural and social conditions of brotherly connections between Crimean and Istanbul Karaites were established many years ago. The identical surnames as Yefet, Levi, Ormeli, Egiz, Chaddiq, Kohen, Al`yanaki, Yeru, Koycu, Kokey, Michri, Kefeli, Aga, Emildesh, Yirtlach, Teriyaki, Ayvaz, Bolek, Sinani, Kulte, Chybar etc. prove this statement. Moreover, any of well-known persons as faith-teacher Aaron (1260-1520) and poet Eraq (who has translated "Bakhchisaray's Fountain" by A. S. Pushkin into Turkish) lived in Istanbul and Crimea. Here found shelter many Karaites when they had escaped Crimea in the end of XIX century. Though many of them left Turkey, several Karaites have remained here. Unfortunately, in the period of Soviet power all those relative and cultural connections between Karaites of Crimea and Istanbul were lost. Things well known years ago now are forgotten. Therefore, here the author try to give some information about Karaites of Crimea and Istanbul in the past and the status of them now.
