Album "Karaites of
Turkey"/ compiled by V. Kefeli - Simferopol-Slippery
Rock, 2005. - 53 pages
This issue of Institute archive is devoted to the Karaites of Istanbul. Here, in Turkey they have been living during 10 centuries, here they have been keeping up precepts; here they gave a good reception to A. Firkovich and M. Szapszal. The relative, cultural and social conditions of brotherly connections between Crimean and Istanbul Karaites were established many years ago. The identical surnames as Yefet, Levi, Ormeli, Egiz, Chaddiq, Kohen, Al`yanaki, Yeru, Koycu, Kokey, Michri, Kefeli, Aga, Emildesh, Yirtlach, Teriyaki, Ayvaz, Bolek, Sinani, Kulte, Chybar etc. prove this statement. Moreover, any of well-known persons as faith-teacher Aaron (1260-1520) and poet Eraq (who has translated "Bakhchisaray's Fountain" by A. S. Pushkin into Turkish) lived in Istanbul and Crimea. Here found shelter many Karaites when they had escaped Crimea in the end of XIX century. Though many of them left Turkey, several Karaites have remained here.
Unfortunately, in the period of Soviet power all those relative and cultural connections between Karaites of Crimea and Istanbul were lost. Things well known years ago now are forgotten. Therefore, here the author try to give some information about Karaites of Crimea and Istanbul in the past and the status of them now. Look at how Karaites of Istanbul take care about graves of their ancestors.
